Top 5 Favorite Period Drama Gossips; #3 Mrs. Forrester

I bet you guys had forgotten about this series! I certainly did for a little while! When I finally did remember, I didn't really feel like writing it, but now it's high time I got back to it!! So here's my third installment of the Period Drama Gossips Series!!

Mrs. Forrester. Is she not the sweetest, dearest little thing!! I should like to go to her house and have tea and cookies with her, maybe blanch some lace, visit Bessie Dearest. I love her darling personality and her optimistic outlook on things.

Mrs. Forrester can often be found in the company of Miss Octavia Poll, and the other Cranford ladies. She is a widow, who adores her milk cow Bessie. "That cow is like a daughter to me." She is extremely loyal, and would do anything for her friends.

I love the circle of Cranford ladies. Their friendship is so sweet, and Mrs. Forrester is such a sweet addition to their group. She is very much a grandmotherly type of woman, which is something I love about her character. 

I feel so sorry for her when poor Bessie gets stuck in the lye pit. My, but we all get a laugh though when she dresses her poor bald cow in pajamas. ;).

Top Five Favorite Period Drama Gossips; #4 Mrs. Jennings

I am sure we would all have to agree, Mrs. Jennings is just SO MUCH FUN!! Her facial expressions (see the picture above), her loud boisterousness, her love for matchmaking (and meddling) and the way she talks and talks without stopping for breath are all part of what make her a memorable character.

Mrs. Jennings is a widowed older woman who has married off all her children and lives with her son-in-law and his family. She and Sir John enjoy teasing Elinor and Marianne about any obvious love interests, and she regularly visits her married daughters and takes a general interest in their affairs. 

Jane Austen said " [Mrs. Jennings] was a very agreeable, cheerful woman."  And she is! Everybody enjoys watching her match make, interfere, and take interest in everyone else's affairs.

And even though it doesn't always seem like it, Mrs. Jennings has a good dose of common sense. While Lady Middleton thinks that Fanny Dashwood is perfectly charming, Mrs. Jennings declares that " She appeared nothing more than a little, proud-looking woman of uncordial address." Also when her daughter Charlotte thinks her new baby is ill, Mrs. Jennings diagnoses the trouble as "nothing in the world but red-gum." 

She also defends Edward when John Dashwood blames him for keeping his engagement to Lucy, declaring that Edward is an honest man and that Lucy is a good girl (*insert Lydia snort*) and deserves a worthy husband.

She is also extremely kind to Elinor and Marianne, inviting them to stay in London with her, continually ignoring Marianne's rudeness, and staying at Cleveland to help Elinor care for Marianne when she becomes sick. (She also shipped Marrianne and Colonel Brandon from the beginning which earns her extra bonus points in my book ;))

Top 5 Favorite Period Drama Gossips: #5 Miss Bates

Hello peeps! Sorry this was so long in coming but I've been terribly busy trying to register for the Fall college semester and putting in a garden and babysitting and oh my, am I tired!! So do bear with me if my posts are long and far apart for awhile. 

 So here is my first Gossip post. I'm excited to finally get this started, though I must say I had quite the time trying to think up 5 gossips to discuss (yet another reason why this is late :P) But here it is...

Now I wasn't sure if Miss Bates counted as a gossip or not. Yes, she is a prattler, but other than going on and on and on about Jane, she doesn't talk about other people that much. But then I remembered the "Have you heard, Mr. Elton is to be married!" comment, and then a few others, and eventually it was decided that she qualified. So here she is folks...

Miss Bates is a middle aged spinster who lives with her elderly mother (who doesn't talk, possibly because her daughter does all the talking that needs to be done.) Her niece Jane Fairfax is her pride and joy and has lived with the Campbell family since she was little, because the Bates lost their fortune and were forced to leave their lavish home for a little cottage in the village. Jane writes letters to her aunt each week, which Miss Bates takes great pleasure in reading to all her neighbors. 

Miss Bates is really a very sweet character. Of course everybody has their moments where they find her annoying, but she really means well. Jane Austen says it better...

“Miss Bates enjoyed a most uncommon degree of popularity for a woman neither young, handsome, rich, nor married. Miss Bates is a happy creature by nature, and everybody likes happy people. Her devotion to Jane is another thing that really stands out to me. Sure, she talks on and on about her, boring everyone to death, as Emma says, but it's because she loves Jane and is just so proud of her. I love the scene where Jane plays piano at the Cole's party and Miss Bates is simply glowing.

Another scene that shows how much she cares about Jane is when she is telling Emma about Jane taking the governess job, and she begins to cry. She loves Jane so much and wants the best for her, which she can't give her. 

Miss Bates is also hilarious! The way she prattles on and on, and her flittery movements are great!

She also has a very forgiving spirit. Miss Bates was very willing to forgive Emma after Box Hill, which really would take a lot of grace.
